There are two totally different soaps. Good quality handcrafted natural soap and synthetic soap- the mass-produced soap.
Good quality handcrafted natural soap- the true soap – is created by mixing together oils such as olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil and castor oil, or fats and lye. During the mixture a reaction takes place and is called saponification process. The result of this reaction – process is a combination of soap and glycerin.
Using olive oil for example will leave elements of olives, using coconut oil will leave elements of coconut, using castor oil will leave elements of castor and so on. Other natural ingredients can of course be added, like donkey milk, for skin nourishment or oatmeal or coffee grounds for exfoliant properties. Nothing should be removed and there is no need to add synthetic chemicals. Good quality handcrafted natural soap is the true soap and it is just fine as it is.
On the other hand we have mass-produced detergent soap, let’s call it synthetic soaps. This is robbed of its most valuable ingredient, glycerin, straight after the saponification process. A natural humectant, glycerin attracts moisture to your skin and is renowned as a soothing emollient. Synthetic soap manufacturers separate the glycerin from the soap to sell or use it in other more expensive products. They then often add cheap synthetic ingredients, detergents, foaming agents and chemical fragrances to the glycerin-lacking soap to simulate the properties of what was removed.

The number ranges are meant to be a relative indicator of the soap’s qualities.

1. Hardness.

Good quality soap must be hard for lasting long in shower conditions. A range of 29 to 54 is satisfactory for a good soap quality. Higher hardness – is harder. A low Iodine value also contributes to hardness.

2. Cleansing,

Cleansing is the soap’s ability to grab on to oils.
How good quality handcrafted natural soap cleans your skin actually?
The upper level of skin surface (epidermis) contains oil. And when dirt comes in touch with the skin it comes in contact with this oil. So, dirty skin is a skin with dirty oil on epidermis. When you wash your skin with soap and water, the dirty oil of epidermis is grabbed from the soap. When you rinse, the dirt oil is washed away. A good soap must clean very well but not too much. The range for Cleansing of a good soap would be 12 to 22. A good quality handcrafted natural soap with this range of cleansing cleans only the epidermis. If the soap cleans also the oil of deeper skin surface (too much) then the skin becomes dry.
Soap made with too much Lauric and/or Myristic Acid such as coconut and palm oil, can irritate the skin by washing away not only the top dirty layer of oils, but also the protective layer of surface oils on the skin. Generally speaking, keeping the total of coconut and palm kernel in our recipe to no more than 30-35% we keep the cleansing in proper range. However, we compensate the strong cleansing of coconut and palm oil by using olive oil (which has a high conditioning value) for superfating.

3. Conditioning.

Conditioning is the soap’s Moisturizers – emollients content. A range of 44 to 69 is satisfactory for a good soap quality.
Moisturizers or emollients are complex mixtures of chemical agents, such soaps, as specially designed to make the external layers of the skin (epidermis) softer and more pliable. They increase the skin’s hydration (water content) by reducing evaporation. Naturally occurring skin lipids and sterols, as well as artificial or natural oils, humectants, emollients, lubricants, etc., may be part of the composition of commercial skin moisturizers. They usually are available as handmade natural soaps for cosmetic and therapeutic uses.

4. Creamy and Bubbly lather

Creamy and bubbly Lather is the soap’s ability to lather up and get bubbly. A typical range of values would be 14 to 46. The higher Bubbly numbers will tend to produce a foamy, fluffy lather rather than a creamy lather with little or no bubbles.
Usually, increasing Bubbly will decrease Creamy and vice versa. The higher Creamy numbers will tend to produce a creamy lather with lesser amounts of bubbles or foam. Soap made with oils that do not contain Lauric, Myristic or Ricinoleic acids will produce soap with just creamy lather. An example would be 100% olive oil soap.

5. Iodine

As a general rule, the lower the number, the harder the bar and the less the conditioning qualities and vice versa. A recipe with iodine values higher than 70 will tend to produce a somewhat soft bar of soap. Definition: number of grams of iodine that will react with the double bonds in 100 grams of fats or oils.

6. INS

A measure of the physical qualities of the soap based on the SAP and iodine value.
This value was introduced by Dr. Robert S. McDaniel in his wonderful book “Essentially Soap”. The exact origin of the value is unclear but INS is derived from Iodine value and the SAP value; hence INS – “Iodine ’n SAP” If the value is not in “Essentially Soap”, it is estimated by subtracting the Iodine Value from the KOH SAP. It is used to predict the physical characteristics of the soap bar – the ideal being 160. Experience has proven a range of about 136 – 170 will generally be acceptable.
